Serum amyloid A (SAA) proteins are a series of apolipoproteins associated with high density lipoproteins in plasma, whose role is to transport cholesterol to the liver for excretion in the bile. They are secreted during the acute phase of inflamation and are involved in a number of infamatory diseases, including amalyoidosis, atheroscterosis and rheumatoid atherisis. Serum Amyloid A levels increase drematically in response to tissue damage and inflamation, hence SAA can be used as a marker for inflamation, and related conditions. Some research has also suggested a link between serum amyloid A and systematic lupus erythematosus.
As well as serum amyloid A, scipac also offer amyloid P, another important protein which plays a role in amyloidosis.
