Hepatitis B virus (HBV) causes an inflammation of the liver and increases risk of hepatocellular carcinoma by 100 fold. The virus is estimated to affect approximately 350 million people worldwide. Hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) is a protein produced by HBV. It is the earliest marker of infection and it is detectable in human blood before the onset of symptoms.
